Settlers in Cumberland Gap cobbled togther an Iron furnace from local stone in order to smelt iron for their homesteads. Iron ore was mined nearby, limestone was added in the process, and firewood was made into charcoal for use as fuel. Water from the nearby stream powered large bellows and a massive hammer mill. This token delightfully depicts the Iron Furnace and a waterwheel turning on homestead.
