SIR: I have the honor to inclose herewith a letter from the Chief of Engineers dated December 23, 1897, together with a copy of a report from Col. Jared A. Smith, Corps of Engineers, dated December 16, 1897, of a survey made by him, in compliance with the provisions of the sundry civil act approved June 4, 1897, of the straight channel in Maumee River and Bay.

SIR: I have the honor to submit the accompanying copy of report, dated December 16, 1897, with maps, by Col. Jared A. Smith, Corps of Engineers, of the results of a survey of the straight channel in Maumee River and Bay, made to comply with provisions of the sundry civil act approved June 4, 1897.
Colonel Smith presents estimates of cost of obtaining a width of 400 feet and a depth of 21 feet at mean level throughout the channels in Maumee River and Bay, as follows:
