This postcard shows an image of the brass Octant that is kept at the Peabody Museum. An octant is a measuring tool for sailors that help them figure out their position and navigate the seas. Most folks would be more familiar with the sextant, which came later.

ON THE BACK: "Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.  Brass octant (Hadley's Quadrant) of French origin, .. With instruments of similar design mariners were able to determine their latitude at sea.  The octant was the forerunner of the sextant."
