This is a Stylemys tortoise skull and partial shell from the White River Formation. These tortoises lived in the Oligocene Period around 35 million years ago. Sylemys fossil shells are rare but their fossil skulls are even more rare and this specimen is museum quality. The skull measures 1.125" x 1.125" x .75" tall and weighs 15 grams. The partial shell fragments measure 1.5" x 1.75" and also weigh 15 grams. The skull remains in excellent condition while the partial shell remains in good-fragile condition with a few loose scutes included. Comes with a Riker display box.

Many commercially acquired fossil specimens will often have incorrect (accidentally or deliberately) locality labels. Many of them are mosaics, made from several specimens or they're heavily restored. We have several specimens in various degrees of completeness and fabricated reconstruction, along with many great specimens that are entirely or largely untouched. Each fossil listed has been thoroughly inspected and researched to provide you with a detailed description. Any concerns, uncertainty, or reconstruction areas will be noted in the description.

It is illegal to import/export fossils in many countries and can be a hassle. Our exotic line of fossils has been part of a long-term private collection and were collected years before any exportation bans. They can legally be sold and transported in the USA.
