The Cullinan III & IV Brooch
The diamonds used to make this brooch were cut from the largest diamond ever found – the 3,106 carat Cullinan which was three times larger than any stone previously discovered when it was mined in Pretoria in South Africa in 1905.
After some back-and-forth, the stone was presented to King Edward VII of the United Kingdom in November 1907. He sent the diamond to the Asschers in the Netherlands to be cut.
The remaining seven principal stones were mounted for Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary Edward’s wife and daughter-in-law. They became part of royal jewellery collection.
One brooch containing two stones, the 94.4 carat Cullinan III and 63.3 carat Cullinan IV, this was named the Cullinan III & IV brooch which is estimated to be worth $50 million making it the most valuable brooch in the world.
Queen Elizabeth II inherited the brooch from her grandmother in 1953. Five years later on a state visit to the Netherlands she visited the Asscher workshop in Amsterdam. She wore the brooch for the occasion, bringing it back to the place where the diamonds were crafted.
The Queen reserved the Cullinan III & IV for very special and important occasions. One of these was a service of thanksgiving held at
St. Paul’s Cathedral in June 2012 during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations
