South American carved gourd instrument 'Guiro', with metal scraper. This hand-carved, ethnic percussive instrument has Peruvian folk art designs depicting rural life. It is played by rubbing the tines along the notches to produce a ratchet-like sound. The sound is designed to imitate the sound of rain and traditionally used for Shamanic Rituals. Additionally, the sound of this instrument type is found on famous rock and roll cuts such as, "Do it Again", by Steely Dan, and "Combination of the Two" by Big Brother and the Holding Company on their album Cheap Thrills. The instrument is also prominent in Latin American music, Salsa, Bomba, Plena and Reggae.
