DESCRIPTION
The two volume first edition of this work, in the publisher's original cloth, and with volume I rebacked.
Samuel Baker's autobiographical account of the 1869 expedition he led at the request of his friend Isma'il Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt and Sudan.
Ismail appointed Barker as governor-general of the equatorial Nile basin with the rank of pasha in the Ottoman army. Among his duties were the annexing of the equatorial Nile basin, establishing Egyptian authority over the region south of now South Sudan, suppressing the slave trade, and opening the great lakes near the equator to navigation.
Volume I is illustrated with a frontispiece, a large folding map of the route, and a further twenty plates. Volume II includes a frontispiece, colour map plate, and thirty plates. Collated, complete.
Fifty-five pages of adverts to the rear of Volume I.

CONDITION
In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Volume I rebacked, with back strip laid down and boards restored, retaining the original endpapers. Bumping to volume II back strip head and tail. Significant rubbing to front board of volume I, with further fading to back strip and rear board. Hinges of volume II starting, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Tide mark to volume I title page. Closed tears and two areas of loss to volume I folding map. Spotting and the odd light tide mark to volume I, with volume II generally clean and bright.
