Antique Pewter Large Footed Historismus Serving Beer Stein Tankard by F.Kainzinger Nuremberg c.1880s
: :
This wonderful serving beer stein/tankard was made in the late 1880s - 1890s. It's a simple but elegant spouted flagon called in Germany "Schabelstitze" - a copy of a 17th century serving stein. It is made of pewter in the style called Historismus (Historicism), very popular in Germany in the 1880s-1890s. The Historismus approach comprises artistic styles that draw their inspiration from recreating historic styles or imitating the work of historic artisans.
The stein features three feet with angel faces and repousse-embossed body design that copies the one from 17th c-18th century shapes. The front of the stein is engraved with the laurel wreath and the original owner's name: "S.E.Windker".
The stein was manufactured by Franz Kainzinger - a pewter manufacturer from Nuremberg active in the 1870s - 1910s. Stamped at the bottom with "F.Kainzinger Nuernberg" manufacturer's mark and "F.K.1672" on the feet, indicating the stein was modeled after a pewter flagon from 1672.
Beautiful and impressive. The stein is 10.5" tall to the top of the finial.
Excellent condition with very minimal dings unavoidable in old pewter. |
