Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823–1901) was an English novelist who wrote to the service of the church. Her books helped to spread the influence of the Oxford Movement. Her abundant work is mostly out of print.

The first appearance of this book was as a series printed from January to December 1865  in The Monthly Packet, editor C. M. Yonge, publishers John and Charles Mozley. The first book version was published in 1866 by MacMillan. It tells the story of Prince Edward, afterwards King Edward I, starting in 1265, and is based on the real events of his adult life, and the imaginary dealings with his cousins, the de Montfort brothers.
