Fine Antique Original 1855 Architectural Colour Lithograph by Victor Jean Baptiste Petit (1817-1874) entitled Bastide des Environs de Marseille. 
 
Originally published for Victor Jean Baptiste Petit's famous architectural work "Habitations Champetres (Country Homes) : Recueil De Maisons, Villas, Chalets, Pavillons, Kiosques, Parcs et Jardins" published in Paris, Monrocq Freres, c1855. This highly detailed architectural lithographic print with fine original colouring is entitled Bastide des Environs de Marseille.  Image size approx. 19cm x 26cm with printed titles and excellent margins for framing, total print size approx. 26.5cm 35cm.  A generally VG clean bright impression (with light crease to extreme top right hand corner margin unaffecting image in anyway), from Petit's famous and important work on Country homes. Please note the actual lithograph is much more clearer and vibrant than that shown in the illustration.  Extremely low selling price, see various art dealer prices for these rare lithographic prints. 
 
Victor Petit was an artist and chromolithographer who documented the picturesque architecture and gardens built in and around Paris during the Second French Empire.  He was a He as also a member of numerous archaelogical associations. Habitations Champêtres was one of four complementary works directed at the newly wealthy and culturally ambitious bourgeoisie of the time.  In the present work the focus is on the variety of country house styles found in different regions of France and, to a small extent, in England and Italy. The parks, grounds arrangements, garden structures and outbuildings are also depicted.  Belvederes, garden pavilions, rustic cabanas and the like are shown along with views of parks such as the Parc de Pinon in Picardie or the Parc du Marchais in Burgundy.  Distinctions are made among maisons champêtres, maisons de plaisance, and maisons bourgeoises; all are shown in grounds settings. The work was available from the publishers in simple black and white lithography or in color lithography; individual plates could also be ordered separately, either coloured or in black and white.
