Il raconte l'histoire d'un grand requin blanc mangeur d'hommes attaquant les baigneurs dans une station balnéaire de la côte est des États-Unis. Comme les requins mécaniques conçus par le département artistique fonctionnaient mal, Spielberg a alors décidé de recourir principalement au suspense en suggérant la présence du requin avec un thème musical inquiétant et minimaliste composé par John Williams pour indiquer ses apparitions imminentes
