Vintage Ultra Rare Mid Century Modern 1950s Double Ceramic Owl Tension Pole Lamp. MCM
Hey everybody, this is one of the rarest mcm 1950s Tension Pole lamps that you will ever see. It will probably be the only one you will ever see. The time to buy something that you will likely never find again is when you find it!
Take a good look at the photos. The two owls are made of ceramic, painted to kind of look like they are carved out of wood I think.
This lamp works as it should. The original switch on the side of the pole works perfectly. The first click turns on one owl, the second click turns off that first owl and turns on the second one, the third click turns on both owls and the fourth click turns everything off.
It looks awesome turned on and turned off and boy, does it get comments from guests. Nobody has seen one before. The pole has it's original gold speckled paint. The top plastic disk that presses against the ceiling was missing, I used a different one for it. When I found it at an estate sale I was so excited, then I saw that one of the owls was broken! The lady running the sales said she had the piece that broke off when they were putting it out for the sale. She said there is another piece on the back that she couldn't find. Knowing I'd never see another one, I bought it hoping I could fix it.
I am an auto body man by trade and was noodling around what product I could use to mend ceramic. Then it hit me, there is a product I use called POR Putty. It is a two part epoxy putty that comes in two bars like two candy bars. You cut them equally and knead them both together in a bowl of water. Then you have about a half hour to work with it by hand like clay. It hardens rock hard.
I made a pattern on the unbroken owl on the back and small piece on the front, so I could make the piece that was missing. So now the broken owl is back in one piece and turned out pretty well. Take a close look at the photos and ask any questions you many have.
It's not perfect and shows some wear. It is still ready to use and enjoy.
