In 1976, as part of the United States Bicentennial, the US Post Office issued a sheet of 50 flags of the individual states. This is the flag of South Dakota which was the 40th state to join the union.
A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Number 1672.
