More about this stamp sheet -  In 1999, the USPS began its series "Nature of America."  Originally conceived as a 6 sheet series, it was so popular that it was expanded to highlight 12 American ecosystems.  The sheets were issued from 1999 - 2010.

Artist John D. Dawson, who had designed the Flowering Trees stamps, was tapped to produce the entire series so that the stamp sheets would look like a set.  His inspiration came from

U.S.P.S. art director Howard Paine suggested the stamps all use artwork by John D. Dawson, 

Some of the design inspiration for these stamps came from the 1997 World of Dinosaurs issue in that a panoramic view included stamps integrated into the scene.  Unlike the  Dinosaurs sheet, the Nature of America were the first US self-adhesive stamps designed into one large scene.  

Each sheet contains 10 unique stamps illustrating one or more species found in that region. To complete the scene, there are additional plants and animals to include up to 30 different species.  The back of each sheet shows a numbered outline to identify all the plants and animals as well as a description of the ecosystem.

This is the first sheet in the Nature of America series  -  the Sonoran Desert.  They were first released at a ceremony held at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp sheet has been designated as Scott Number 3293.
