Design Description When the original Danceteria opened on West 37th Street in New York City in 1979, it helped define the city's emerging new-wave nightclub scene and became the blueprint for countless clubs that followed throughout the 1980s. Its greatest legacy, however, came with its second location at 30 West 21st Street, which operated from 1982 to 1986 and became one of the most influential nightlife destinations of the decade. It was there that Madonna gave her first live performance in 1983, and the club later appeared in the cult classic Desperately Seeking Susan. Just three months after opening, the owners hired legendary talent booker Ruth Polsky, whose adventurous programming transformed Danceteria into one of New York's premier showcases for emerging music and art. The club became a cultural crossroads where punk, new wave, hip-hop, industrial, and alternative music collided, attracting many of the artists who would define the decade. Performers and regulars included Madonna, New Order, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Sade, Wham!, The Smiths, Cyndi Lauper, Run-DMC, Depeche Mode, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Sonic Youth, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Bauhaus, The B-52's, The Cult, Soft Cell, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, RuPaul, and countless others. More than just a nightclub, Danceteria became one of the epicenters of 1980s music, fashion, and art, leaving an enduring mark on New York's cultural landscape. To get the length, measure from the high shoulder point down to the bottom of the shirt. To get the width, measure approximately 1-inch below the armhole, across the chest, from seam to seam. While our tees are all made using premium, pre-shrunk, ring-spun cotton, there can be some shrinkage depending on your personal wash and dry cycles. With that said, if you’re on the fence, we always suggest going up a size. All sizes are provided in inches! Please note that variations in sizing of up to 1.5 inches are possible.
