FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION IS A VERY HANDSOME MATT GLAZED VASE BY F. CARLTON BALL (1911 - 1992). UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS A CHIP TO THE RIM ON ONE SIDE. IT IS NOT VISIBLE WHEN VIEWED FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE. I HAVE PRICED IT FAIRLY LOW BECAUSE OF THIS. MR. BALL WAS ONE OF THE GREAT POWERHOUSES OF 20TH CENTURY POTTERY AND I BELIEVE THIS VASE SHOULD BE RESTORED AND PRESERVED. IT IS VERY CHARACTERISTIC OF F. C. BALL'S WORK AND IS QUITE DRAMATIC. IT HAS A CHALKY HEAVILY TEXTURED BODY USING A TOOL MR. BALL PROBABLY MADE HIMSELF. IN HIS BOOK 'MAKING POTTERY WITHOUT A WHEEL' HE DESCRIBES VARIOUS IMPROVISATIONS USING A WIDE RANGE OF FOUND OBJECTS. THE PATTERN ON THIS VASE MAY HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED WITH A NOTCHED FURNITURE CASTER. MR. BALL WORKED WITH MANY OTHER FAMOUS POTTERS FROM THIS PERIOD. ONE EXAMPLE IS THAT HE ASSISTED MARGUERITE WILDENHAIN ESTABLISH HER SCHOOL OF CERAMIC DESIGN, POND FARM, IN GUERNEVILLE, CALIFORNIA . HE IS REPRESENTED IN MANY MUSEUMS INCLUDING THE SMITHSONIAN AND THE AMERICAN CRAFT MUSEUM. THIS VASE HAS A DIAMETER OF 6 INCHES BY 7 1/2 INCHES HIGH. IT IS SIGNED TWICE ON THE BASE WITH HIS SIGNATURE IN BLACK INK AND ALSO INSCRIBED F. C. BALL WITH A TRIMMING NEEDLE WHEN THE CLAY WAS LEATHER HARD.
