Hilger & Watts ltd No 33433 Vernier Theodolite 1940. This is a finely made c. 1940's Vernier Theodolite by E.R. Watts & Son, Ltd., London, Serial No. 33433. It features a 4 1/2-inch horizontal circle reading by vernier to 20 seconds of arc and a 4-inch vertical circle similarly divided. There are 4 attached microscopes for reading the verniers although one is missing the lens assembly. The two for the horizontal scales are attached to the white folding light reflectors. The vertical circle is enclosed within a protective housing. On the housing exterior is mounted a spirit level that is read by the observer through a tilting mirror assembly. There is an 8-inch long telescpe with excellent optics inclulding a reticle with stadia wires. The original tripod thread size appears to be 3 1/2-inch x 8 although an adaptor now converts it to 5/8" x 11. There is no tripod. The instrument needs cleaning and oiling noting the upper horizontal motion is presently immobile and the vertical motion sluggish. This instrument is on consignment and I have never used it although I suspect the lack of movement is one of cleaning and oiling rather than physical damage. It is being offered in as-is condition, however, and there is a low reserve in consideration of these factors. The instrument rotates very smoothly upon unclamping the lower horizontal motion. There is some very minor loss of paint to some of the edges, and two screw holes in one of the standards. A Hilger-Watts instruction booklet from the 1950's for similar instruments is included. There is a nicely finished mahogany case painted dark green on the outside. Small tools are missing. Cashier's check or money order preferred for quicker shipment. A personal check is OK but item will be held until clear.
