DOMINIQUE LAPORTE'S CHRISTO, BOLDLY SIGNED  BY ACCLAIMED ARTISTS CHRISTO AND JEAN CLAUDE
Numbered 5/86 Limited Edition printing.

By Dominique G. Laporte : Christo. New York: Pantheon, (1986). Small quarto, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

First American edition of this photo-illustrated retrospective on the art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

This work focuses on this installation art of Christo, who is known for his large-scale art pieces that focus on transforming the perception (and sometimes the usage) of the environment in which they are set. Best known for wrapping landmarks in fabric to change the external appearance and to alter the interplay of light, shadow, and air, Christo has also experimented with structures such as umbrellas and fabric gates. This densely photo-illustrated work includes images and rich text explaining works such as The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Wrapped Coast, Valley Curtain, Running Fence, and Surrounded Islands. Published in 1986, it also includes preliminary plans for The Umbrellas, a project in which giant yellow umbrellas and blue umbrellas were set out on the California and Japanese coasts (and, as a result of which, two people were tragically killed by the steel-framed structures). While this book is signed and written about "Christo"—a solitary artist—Christo was two artists until 2009, a married couple named Hristo Vladimirov Yavachev (the original "Christo") and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (his wife). The couple began accepting joint credit, including retroactively, in 1994 and continued to do so until 2009 when Jeanne-Claude died of a brain aneurysm. The Gates, Central Park, New York, 1979-2005 was their last joint work. Since Jeanne-Claude's death, Christo has produced solo work and has also moved forward plans he made with his late wife. Translated into English from the original French by Abby Pollak. The French first edition was published the same year.
