STEP came up with a UNIQUE concept where the top of the blade is tapered at 3MM to fit the Bauer VERTEXX EDGE holder (with quick release system), but is actually 4MM thick at ice level. From experience, goalies rather skate on 4MM thickness blades than 3MM. The 4MM offers more stability, and a much better bite angle, so provides a serious advantage to goalies.
