JOSEPH FOR THE CHILDREN by Helen S. Telford Circa. Early 1900s ILLUSTRATED & RARE Antiquarian Hardback Book. With 16 illustrated full page colour plates by R. Ramsay Russell, including a frontispiece. These are all present and accounted for. Robert Ramsay Russell was a Scottish artist, who I believe was born in 1854 and died in 1918.
Published by Robert Culley, 2 Castle Street, City Road, London and 26 Paternoster Row, London. Printed by William Clowes And Sons, Limited, Duke Street, Stamford Street, London.
This book is not dated. It is also scarce, and so it is difficult therefore to make comparisons with similar books. However. Robert Culley was a Publisher of religious works circa 1890 – 1910. In 1889 he was appointed secretary of the Sunday School Union and in 1907 he was appointed Book Steward, taking an active interest in the Publishing House and his name appears in many books as publisher. He died in February 1910.
This details the life of Joseph (from the Bible), intended to be suitable for little Children. It really is a lovely small book, full of fantastic artwork.
This does not have a Dust Jacket.
The stunning red cloth bound cover is highly decorative and has a beautiful colour illustration pasted to the front board, surrounded by wonderful gilt decorations, lettering and a gilt border. There is a further gilt illustration and lettering on the spine. The cover is intact and robust and in a good condition for a book of this age. The cover has small marks, a little wear (more-so to the edges), bumped corners and a small amount of creasing and a gentle lean to the spine.
Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent with the age of this book, as it is at least over 110 years old. There are small red stains on the pastedowns and endpapers. There are only very small marks, stains or light foxing to the rest of the pages. The pages are in an overall neat state, with only the very occasional small fold or light crease. Only a couple of pages have very small rips to the edges, and this does not obscure the text. There is no pen or pencil written inside this book. Two of the plates are loose within the book (pages 81 and 95) and are creased to the outer edges. They could, however, be reattached. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference. A few further plates are partially loose, just to one side, and so are still attached within the book. The gutter is exposed slightly between pages 60 and 61 (please see photo). This is very minor and other than this, the binding is secure. There are no missing pages, and all 160 pages are present. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.
This measures approximately 14 cm by 10.8 cm and 1.8 cm wide. It weighs approximately 146 grams.
Thank you so much for looking.
