Back Olof Andersson grew up and lived in relative poverty most of his life at Backgården in Ullvi. According to the church records, he was "unfinished" and walked on wooden legs. After the parents died, the younger brother Back Erik , who was also a valley painter, was the owner of the farm. In 1795 he married a woman 15 years older, the marriage was childless and the wife died in 1814. At the age of 48 he married for the second time and through his marriage came to live in Övermo and instead used the farm name Hjerp . He died in 1820 at the age of 53 of a "stroke".
Back Olof was one of the earliest valley painters and is considered the first to combine the two elements of biblical motifs and decorative rose painting. Back Olof Andersson painted both cabinets and paper wallpaper, around 80 paintings have been preserved. He signed his paintings "OAS". Back Olof was out on work hikes around Dalarna but also to Härjedalen, Hälsingland, and Västmanland. In one known case, he collaborated with another painter, namely Jufwas Anders Ersson . However, he does not seem to have painted together with his younger brother, Back Erik.
A copy of Gustav Adolf's Bible from 1618 that belonged to Back Olof has been found in Ullvi. In it he made several notes and among the illustrations drew horsemen of the kind that were characteristic of his paintings. One has also found a copy of Johann Hübner's illustrated book Two Times Two and Fifty Selected Biblical Stories, with both Back Olof's and his brother's signatures in it.
