More about these stamps:  In 1998, the USPS issued this Christmas stamp featuring the Florentine Madonna and Child.  The image on the stamp is photograph of a 15th-century sculpture created by an unknown artist in Florence, Italy.   This sculpture is a painted and gilded terra cotta statue of the  Christ Child being held by his mother, Mary and is on permanent display in the Italian Renaissance Gallery at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 3244.
