Lady Murasaki Shikibu, born in the year 978, was a member of the Fujiwara clan – one of the most influential families of the Heian period. Her literary ability quickly won her a place in the entourage of the Empress Akiko, whose court greatly valued the art of writing.

Edward G. Seidensticker (1921-2007), Professor Emeritus of Japanese at Columbia University, is a noted translator and the author of several books in English and Japanese. He has received from the Japanese government one of its highest honors, the third-class Order of the Rising Sun, for his part in introducing Japanese novels abroad.
