BOSWELLIA SERRATA - INDIAN FRANKINCENSE - OLIBANUM
Indian frankincense is a very popular usable exotic Indian tree. It comes from India and parts of Pakistan. It is a medium-sized tree with a highly branched crown. It produces a fragrant resin called frankincense. Due to its fragrance properties, it is used in the production of incense. It may be interesting to note that frankincense was most likely in the biblical incense brought by one of the Three Wise Men. What's more, olibanum is valued and used for centuries in Asian and African folk medicine as a multifunctional medicine. Studies have shown that it has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immune system stimulating, sedative, antibacterial and anticancer properties. The listed properties are mainly due to the boswellic acids contained in the extract of frankincense resin. It is estimated that they constitute about 30% of pure resin.
