DESCRIPTION

A signed copy of James John Hissey's account of a holiday in the South, with 15 wood cuts by the author and a fold out map to the rear, collated and complete.

In this simple chronicle of a leisurely stagecoach tour of Southern English Roads, wealthy farmer and landowner James John Hissey emphasises the beauty and interest on our own doorstep as he describes a 'restful, health-giving holiday, spent in driving about the peace-bestowing English country'.

Addressed to the publisher, and signed by the author. Reads: 'To Richard Bentley, this volume is inscribed by his friend' in print, with Hissey's signature beneath in ink.

Gift bookplate to front pastedown. Addressed to 'Anna Fisher' from John Munro Woolsey and his wife Alice Woolsey. John Munro Woolsey was a US district Judge in Southern New York who authored several important and progressive decisions on freedom of expression such as in 1933, where he rules that James Joyce's Ulysses was not obscene and could be lawfully imported into the US.

Eight pages advertising other works by Hissey to the rear.
