From 1998 - 2000, the US Postal Service released a 10 sheet series called "Celebrate the Century." This was a limited-edition set of commemorative stamps highlighting the most significant people, events, and accomplishments of the 20th century. A page was created for each decade, with the final sheet, the 1990's, issued on January 12, 2000.
This 32c stamp features the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame. These men, the backfield of the 1924 football team, were among a winning group of players at the University of Notre Dame under coach Knute Rockne. Making up the Four Horsemen were Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, Jim Crowley, and Elmer Layden. This photo and the publicity it acclaimed was the brainchild of sportswriter Grantland Rice to promote the team that only lost 2 games (both to Nebraska) in three years.
A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Number 3184L.
