Unique Artist Made COIN Spoon 1956 Australia Penny 1911 1/2 Penny Digger Hat Finial COA

This is one of the owner's favorites in her coin spoon collection due to the amount of work and creativity that went into the creation of it. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that names the artist as Anne Christie. The bowl is made from a domed 1956 Australian kangaroo penny. The handle is twisted. The finial is a second coin, a 1911 half penny that has been shaped into a digger hat, the traditional headwear of Australian soldiers and a beloved symbol of the nation. It is 5" tall.

“The hybrid offspring of coin and spoon collecting traces its roots back to the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London. Visitors took away a new item, the souvenir spoon, and a worldwide collecting phenomenon was born. Stores catering to tourists carried a variety of engraved silver or enameled spoons celebrating the nearest city, celebrity, or big event. At the 1893 Columbian World’s Expo in Chicago, souvenir spoon collecting rose to the level of a national craze.

The coin spoon is just one type of souvenir spoon. Coins were found to be the ideal raw materials for local craftsmen to use for spoon making. A coin spoon will have a finial, handle, bowl or more than one section made from a legal tender coin. Many of these are silver since that metal is easy to work with, but coin spoons come in a variety of metals. Coins may be cut, carved, rounded, rolled and twisted to make spoons.”

About Discounted Shipping: USA shipping only. I am happy to discount shipping within 24 hours of the first purchase if you request a discounted invoice after your last auction concludes but BEFORE payment is sent. Large fragile items are not usually subject to this option because they often have to ship in separate boxes. 

I strive to ship items via the least expensive way possible to save you money, and I utilize eBay USPS shipping for just that reason, but tracking will always be included because it is an eBay requirement.
