In the original unclipped dustwrapper.

Complete in two volume.

A detailed study into the lives of the aristocracy during the Heian period, which ran from 794 to 1185.

This classical period of Japanese history is generally considered to be the peak of imperial court, with flourishing poetry and literature. Katakana script emerged during this period.

Volume I illustrated with sixteen plates.

Volume II illustrated with eleven plates.

Written by William H. and Helen Craig McCullough. Helen was a Japanologist, who is best known for her translation of 'The Tale of the Heike'.


CONDITION

In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, fine. A couple of very faint marks to the head of the front board of Volume II. A couple of light marks and very light edgewear to the dustwrapper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
