Attractive illustrated map of the Ottoman Empire as at circa 1850 (when engraved) in Europe, called Turkey then, but with current lower Western Black Sea Countries of Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania, Albania, Northern Greece plus an inset of Crete and all the Balkan states, except part of Croatia called Dalmatia. The map was engraved by John Rapkin as were most of the Tallis maps. The illustrations done by H. Warren and engraved by J. Rogers are of a person - Greek Caloyer, The Bosphorus and Constantinople with sailing ships in the foreground and the Ali Pasha reclining smoking, assisted by a kneeling person.

John Tallis founder of Tallis and Co., London map publishers who traded under various names: L. Tallis, Tallis & co, John Tallis, John Tallis & co. (London & New York) between 1838 and 1851. After 1850-51, as is the case with this map, their maps were published by the London Printing and Publishing Co., London and New York. The Illustrated Atlas of the World, first published in 1849 with the maps drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin was one of the last atlases to be truly decorated by various artists attributed on each map and is therefore highly prized.

Folded edition, but excellent antique condition. Faint age toning on the fold and page edges, some marks in the margins and the very top of the title cartouche, outside the decorative margin is trimmed. The number 13 outside the border at top left. A lovely copy with ample margins for framing.

305x225mm inside border and paper 370x270 mm. The map will be folded or rolled for tracked postage.
