My experience tells me that you should ensure you remove all remnants of old gasket thoroughly
tighten the cam cover down gently and evenly
do not overtighten the cam cover ... the oval shaped gasket will flatten and potentially leak
you do not need sealant if you do it this way
my own gasket on my own b202 car is still leak free after 2 years
