THICKNESSES

To make leather a uniform thickness, hides are run through a splitting machine caller a skiver. However, each animal or cow is different and there is always variation in thickness even within a hide. Our leather has 1.4 mm to 1.6 mm perfect for upholstery, bags, wallets…

CHROME TAN

Chrome tanning is the most popular method used to create leather today. Chrome tanning uses a mix of minerals, salts and chemicals to treat the hide. Chrome tanned hides can come in a wider variety of colors including very bright colors.

For the sake of simplicity, when Cueros Especiales FL sells Leather, we can provide the customer with the price per hide. Typically, leather is priced by the square foot.

Calculating how much leather you will need to complete your project can be a tricky thing. We always recommend talking with your cutter/upholsterer to get a better idea of the square footage you will need.

Many of our customers are used to working in yards (that is how fabric is measured). In that case we use a conversion of 18 ft? to every one yard (taking into account wastage). You can use the table below to guild you:
