In August of 1861, the Confederate War Department called upon the governor of Texas to furnish from Texas twenty companies of infantry for the defense of the Virginia front.  These companies were organized in Virginia as the 1st, 4th and

the 5th Texas Infantry the cornerstone of the eastern "Texas Brigade" initially commanded by Brigadier-General
Louis Wigfall  and afterwards by Brigadier-General John B. Hood.

Mrs. Fannie Wigfall prepared a state flag for her husband's incipient command.  On July 31, 1861, in the presence
of Jefferson Davis and the Wigfall family, the 1st Texas Infantry received a newly made state flag that would serve
as its regimental color during its first year of service.  The 1st Texas Infantry was one of the few Texas units to 
actually carry the "Lone Star Flag" as its flag.

In 1905, the flag would be repatriated to Texas by the U.S. War Department.
