More about these stamps:  In 1996, the USPS issued this set of four stamps called the American Folk Heroes.  The artist for this series was David LaFleur, who had previously designed stamps.  His designs were a combination of cartoon and poster art, using his own impressions after reading the folk tales.  The heroes depicted were Paul Bunyan, Mighty Casey, Pecos Bill, and John Henry.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847.  Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. These stamps have been designated as Scott Number 3086a.
