Bring early spring colour to pots and borders with Iris reticulata ‘Pauline’ – a compact dwarf iris with slim leaves and rich purple flowers. This is a Reticulata (netted) iris, valued for flowering early in the season and looking especially good in containers, rockeries and at the front of sunny beds.

1) When: plant in autumn for flowers the following spring.

2) Depth: plant bulbs about twice their own depth.

3) Spacing: plant 5–10 cm apart, or closer in pots for a fuller display.

4) Water in after planting, then keep just lightly moist while growing (avoid waterlogging).

• After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally – this helps feed the bulb for next year.

• In pots, ensure drainage holes are clear and use a free-draining compost (a gritty top dressing helps keep flowers clean after rain).

• Keep bulbs away from children and pets. Handle with care if you have sensitive skin.
