REGULATOR COLUMN ALAMANCE BATTLEGROUND STATE HISTORICAL SITE NEAR BURLINGTON,NORTH CAROLINA
During Governor William Tryon's administration of North Carolina,then a Royal Colony,the Piedmont settlers organized as "Regulators" and defied the colonial government. This defiance led to the Battle of Alamance,May 16,1771,in which Tryon with 1,100 militia men and eight cannon crushed 2,000 Regulators. The monument at left of picture is the Regulator column in their honor.
