A rotating band is a metal band that serves to engage the rifling on the gun and trap propellant gases at the rear of the projectile. Engaging the rifling imparts a spin on the projectile, and the spin stabilizes the projectile while it is in flight.  Rotating bands may be made out of many different materials including brass, copper, iron, and zinc. There are many different designs of rotating bands: Some are solid, and some have grooves.
