This coin is called a "Tickey" and is revered in South Africa. It is given as a good luck wedding present in South Africa and is widely collected by the populace.  

This coin is part of the South Africa "MARITIME" series. The 2011 coins featured the "VAN DER STEL" .

This is a small coin and is similar in size to a US dime / 10 cent coin. A U.S. dime is 17.91mm in diameter and this coin is 16.3mm and is slightly smaller than a dime.
