Early Editions, with Vol I being the First Edition and Vol II being the Second Edition.
Complete two volume set in the publisher's original cloth binding, with Vol II rebacked using the original spine cloth.
Illustrated with a frontispiece to Vol I as well as one folding map to each of the two volumes.
This is a travel work by Frederick Burnaby which recounts the intelligence officer's experience traveling on horseback to the Khanate of Khiva. Burnaby made his way through Russian Asia even though it had been closed to travellers, with war breaking out between the Russian army and the Turcoman tribesmen.
Burnaby made this trek in the winter of 1875-76, trudging through extreme winter blizzards and coming close to death, evading the Russian army, and eventually making his way to the Khanate.
Frederick Burnay (1842-1885) was a British Army intelligence officer, known for his adventurous spirit and his pioneering achievements. He was seen as a favourable figure in the minds of Victorian England, travelling to various countries, speaking numerous foreign languages, and publishing several books.
With twenty-four pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of Vol I as well as the rear endpaper and paste down.
With a bookseller's labels to the front paste down of Vol I, from the W. H. Smith & Son's Subscription Library. Illustrated bookplate to Vol II belong to the Prinknash monastery.
Collated, complete.
CONDITION
In the publisher's original cloth binding, with Vol II rebacked. Externally, very smart. Light bumping and edge wear to the extremities and the spine. Wear along the joints of Vol I. Marks to boards. Light spotting to the textblock of Vol II. Labels and bookplates to front paste downs of Vol I and II. Original paste downs and endpapers laid back on boards of Vol II. Internally, firmly bound. Ink inscription to front endpaper of Vol II. Pages are bright and clean, with age-toning to the margins of text.
