THE POLITICAL GENIUS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN

ACCLAIMED HISTORIAN DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN won the Pulitzer Prize for her monumental book No Ordinary Time about the political home front in the United States during the difficult years of World War II.  With this equally monumental and wonderfully readable volume Team of Rivals she takes us back to another difficult time in American history - the Civil War period - with a riveting account of the leadership and political skills of Abraham Lincoln.

After Lincoln won the presidential election in 1860, he put together a Cabinet that included three of his rivals - William H Seward, Salmon P Chase and Edward Bates - who had been angry and disappointed at losing the race.  This Team of Rivals helped him achieve his goals of preserving the union and winning the war.  Lincoln gained the respect of the men who had opposed him so bitterly because of his great skills as a politician and a leader and his empathy for others.

THIS BOOK IS IN VERY NICE CONDITION with clean, crisp and unmarked pages, a firm and square hardcover binding and an intact dust-jacketIt has been read gently and there are no signs of previous ownership such as an inscription or a bookplate - but one page does have a wrinkle on it.  There are black-and-white photographs and, in addition to a general index, there are copious source notes.  It is a heavy book at over 3 lbs and this has pushed the mailing costs up a bit.

This book was used as the basis for the 2012 Steven Spielberg film Lincoln that starred Daniel Day-Lewis as the title character and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln.  The film was an international success and dominated the Academy Awards with 12 nominations.  It won two Oscars - including Best Actor for Day-Lewis.
