Charlie Chaplin, considered to be one of the most pivotal stars of the early days of Hollywood, lived an interesting life both in his films and behind the camera. He is most recognized as an icon of the silent film era, often associated with his popular "Little Tramp" character; the man with the toothbrush mustache, bowler hat, bamboo cane, and a funny walk. Charles Chaplin, one of the most versatile of artists ever to work in film, also composed music to accompany his silent films. Much of his music work has been underappreciated, overshadowed by his onscreen ability. Interestingly, one of his early music ventures offers a glimpse at the business side of Chaplin. Even at this formative time in his career, Chaplin had grand plans as an entrepreneur when it came to even an ancillary aspect of his independent business such as music publishing.

Offered here is the beautiful custom framed display is a letter from Chaplin, dated December 10, 1916, drafted by Chaplin on his ornate Charlie Chaplin Music Publishing Company letterhead. A brief letter of reply to an admirer in which Chaplin writes: “I beg to acknowledge with many thanks your interesting letter, and, complying with your request, I am enclosing one of my photographs.” The letter is handsomely signed by Chaplin at the conclusion in black steel tip pen and stands in excellent condition. In 1916 some of his musical compositions ("two very bad songs," Chaplin later remarked) became the foundation of his own short-lived music publishing company. Headquartered in Downtown Los Angeles, the Charlie Chaplin Music Publishing Company sold few of the two thousand copies of sheet music it had printed, and shortly went out business. Letters from Chaplin’s music venture are extremely rare. The letter is tastefully housed along with a collectible figurine of Chaplin as The Tramp, a classic 8” x 10” of Chaplin also from the Tramp, and a gold engraved descriptive plaque. Superb!
