Yoshi's photography explores a dark side of the human experiment. His work from his time in San Francisco reflects deviant aspects of humanity. Many of his subjects are people that a lot of us would consider "drug addicts, scumbags, gutter punks, homeless trannies," and so on, and they are presented in stark grayscale only, yet they are beautifully contrasted. Very much like black metal, his photos are both ugly and grotesque, but artfully stunning at the same time. While one basic impulse would be to rid our lives of such "unsavory characters", we should instead try to see something of ourselves in them. Just as we are all inclined to have moments of total nihilism, we are all partially formed of unsavory characteristics.
