Reigning Queens was Warhol’s largest portrait series, completed in 1985. It portrayed four monarchs who held their thrones by birthright—Elizabeth II, Beatrix, Margrethe II, and Ntombi Twala. Warhol based each work on official state portraits, then transformed them with vivid colour blocks and linear overlays that highlighted jewels and regalia.

This Castelli Uptown advertisement is especially significant as it documents Warhol’s engagement with African royalty, making Queen Ntombi’s portrait one of the more uncommon images from the series. As ephemeral gallery material, most of these posters were discarded after the exhibition, which increases their collectability today. A vibrant piece of Warhol ephemera and a unique addition to any Pop Art or contemporary collection.
