A bit of history.  Freemasonry gained popularity in the 18th century, especially in Britain. British Masons organized their first North American chapter in 1731 in Pennsylvania. Members are required to express their belief in a supreme being and in the immortality of the soul. Masons are also expected to obey civil laws, hold to high moral standards and contribute to charities. For George Washington, joining the masons served a rite of passage and a reflection of his dedication to civic responsibility.

The Ancient and Accepted 32nd Degree Freemasonry, or Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, is one of several Rites of Freemasonry. It is a fraternity of Brothers committed to journeying deeper into the highest principles, teachings, and ideals of the Masonic craft. Scottish Rite Masons work is guided by six core values – Reverence for God, Integrity, Devotion to Country, Justice, Tolerance, and Service to Humanity.

The Scottish Rite offers a series of degrees (from the 4th degree to the 32nd degree) that supplement and amplify the philosophical teachings of the first three degrees conferred in the symbolic lodge. T
he Consistory (from the Latin consistere - stand firm ) is responsible for conferring the 19th through the 32nd degrees. These degrees demonstrate the challenges of social and moral conflicts, drawing on lessons from the age of chivalry through modern day.

The 20th Degree - Master Ad Vitam - helps one to comprehend Deity, the forces of nature and good and evil. The Allegory of the Twentieth Degree is presented as a drama of the American spirit confronting the challenge of disloyalty and treason, e.g., Benedict Arnold.
