You can read the note written on the back of the piece of scripture that is dated to 1938. The paper itself appears to be much older than the dating of that note. This was given to somebody by their priest after going on a mission to Japan it claims, but it also describes the accompanying paper as Joss paper which from what I found online is from Chinese tradition, so I'm not sure if it is something used in Japan as well or if the person back then just got confused about which culture was being talked about. I'm not fluent in either language, but to me the characters on the piece of scripture look Chinese rather than Japanese, which makes sense considering the piece of Joss paper accompanying it. Either way this is paper that was meant to be burnt, that has instead survived all these years. A very incredible piece of history!
