The Importance of the PAT Score
The Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) is the only section in the DAT that does not require academic knowledge or training. It is designed to be used as a predictor of an applicant’s performance in the preclinical operative skills and restorative dentistry practical laboratory classes. The ability to perceive small differences is also important in selecting candidates for dental schools that require eye-to-hand fine motor coordination in their curriculum.
Just as perceptual aptitude is not typically correlated with general grade point average (GPA) in dental school, the PAT score is likewise NOT included in the computation of the DAT academic average score. The importance of your performance in this test
varies from school to school wherein the minimum requirement can be as low as 16 to as high as 20. Needless to say, the best way to determine the extent of your preparation for the PAT is to consult directly with the institution to which you are applying.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Gold Standard DAT Masters Series has assembled an enormous amount of quality DAT PAT practice questions for you - perhaps the most ever associated with a published book. The questions are in this book as well as online in exam format to simulate your upcoming real DAT. Your practice questions are associated with helpful solutions which may use color or video to help you better visualize the steps to take so you can practice the procedures to arrive at the right answer.
Aim to complete all of the practice questions available to you. If time does not allow that, use your resources like an open buffet: Focus on whichever sections you like based on your diagnostic performance from the mini tests or full section tests after each of the following chapters.
Book reviews:
This book is great. Really gives you an understanding of what’s going to be on the DAT.
This book was clear. It had a system of explaining, short practice problems, then longer timed problems with explanations. These books tend to have a lot of typos but i didn't find one until almost page 200.
