BS 2482 Graded Scaffold Boards

High-quality graded timber scaffold boards manufactured for use as working platforms within suitable scaffolding systems.

These heavy-duty timber boards are BS 2482 graded and manufactured from PEFC-certified timber, providing a strong and durable board suitable for professional scaffolding applications.

Each board measures approximately 225mm wide × 36mm thick and features metal-protected ends to help reinforce the timber and reduce splitting during handling and use.

Available in 8ft, 10ft and 13ft lengths.

Scaffold boards are also extremely popular for furniture, shelving, workbenches, landscaping and rustic DIY projects due to their substantial construction and distinctive appearance.

BS 2482 Graded

These scaffold boards are graded to BS 2482, the British Standard relating to timber scaffold boards.

The grading process is intended to ensure boards meet the appropriate requirements for their intended scaffolding application.

When being used as part of a scaffolding system, the complete scaffold must still be correctly designed, erected, inspected and maintained in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

Boards should always be checked before use, and damaged or unsuitable boards should not be incorporated into a working scaffold.

PEFC-Certified Timber

The boards are manufactured from PEFC-certified timber.

PEFC certification supports responsibly managed forests and traceable timber supply chains.

This makes the boards a practical choice for customers seeking responsibly sourced construction timber.

Metal Banded Ends

Each scaffold board features protective metal bands around the ends.

These bands help:

  • Reinforce the board ends
  • Reduce splitting
  • Protect vulnerable end grain
  • Improve durability during handling
  • Maintain the integrity of the timber

The bands are a standard feature of traditional scaffold boards.

If the board is being repurposed for furniture or decorative use, the metal bands may be removed if required.

Suitable Applications

These scaffold boards are suitable for:

  • Scaffolding platforms
  • Construction projects
  • Building work
  • Access platforms within suitable scaffold systems
  • Rustic furniture
  • Shelving
  • Tables
  • Benches
  • Workbenches
  • Storage shelves
  • Garden furniture
  • Raised beds
  • Interior features
  • Display stands
  • Shopfitting
  • Landscaping
  • DIY projects

Scaffolding Use

Scaffold boards are specifically manufactured to provide a robust working surface when correctly installed as part of a suitable scaffolding system.

When used for scaffolding:

  • Ensure boards are adequately supported.
  • Follow all applicable scaffolding regulations and guidance.
  • Do not use visibly damaged boards.
  • Inspect boards before use.
  • Ensure the complete scaffold has been correctly erected.
  • Follow required support-spacing guidance.
  • Do not exceed the permitted loading of the scaffold system.
  • Replace boards showing significant deterioration or structural damage.

Scaffolding should only be erected or altered by appropriately competent persons.

Furniture & DIY Projects

Scaffold boards have become popular for creating rustic and industrial-style furniture.

They can be used to create:

  • Dining tables
  • Coffee tables
  • Desks
  • Benches
  • Shelving
  • Bookcases
  • Workbenches
  • Storage units
  • Bed frames
  • Interior feature walls

The substantial timber section gives the boards a strong, distinctive appearance.

For furniture projects, additional sanding, planing, filling or finishing may be required depending on the desired appearance.

Shelving

Scaffold boards are particularly popular for heavy-duty and rustic shelving.

They can be combined with:

  • Steel brackets
  • Industrial pipe brackets
  • Timber supports
  • Wall-mounted shelf brackets
  • Bespoke frames

Always ensure the wall fixings, brackets and supporting structure are suitable for the combined weight of the board and items being stored.

Cutting & Working

Scaffold boards can be cut and adapted using standard woodworking equipment.

They can be:

  • Cut to length
  • Drilled
  • Screwed
  • Sanded
  • Planed
  • Stained
  • Painted
  • Oiled

For best results:

  • Use suitable timber-cutting tools.
  • Support the board during cutting.
  • Use sharp blades.
  • Remove or account for metal end bands before cutting near the board ends.
  • Check carefully for metal before sawing.
  • Sand rough areas where required.
  • Wear suitable eye, respiratory and hearing protection.

Sanding & Finishing

Scaffold boards are supplied as practical construction timber rather than furniture-grade finished boards.

If being used for furniture or decorative work, customers may wish to:

  • Sand the surface
  • Round or smooth edges
  • Fill small imperfections
  • Apply wood stain
  • Apply furniture oil
  • Apply wax
  • Apply varnish
  • Paint the timber

The amount of preparation required will depend on the desired finished appearance.

Natural Timber Characteristics

Scaffold boards are manufactured from natural timber.

Individual boards may therefore feature:

  • Knots
  • Grain variations
  • Colour variation
  • Saw marks
  • Surface marks
  • Small splits
  • Checks
  • Resin pockets
  • Rough areas
  • Minor edge imperfections
  • Slight bowing
  • Slight twisting
  • End-grain variation

These are normal characteristics of construction-grade timber and do not automatically indicate a defective board.

If purchasing the boards specifically for furniture or decorative use, please be aware that preparation may be required to achieve a smooth cosmetic finish.

Timber Movement

Natural timber responds to changes in moisture, temperature and humidity.

Boards may therefore experience some:

  • Expansion
  • Shrinkage
  • Bowing
  • Twisting
  • Checking
  • Surface cracking

Correct storage and allowing the timber to acclimatise before use can help minimise movement.

Outdoor & Garden Projects

Scaffold boards are commonly repurposed for garden and landscaping projects.

However, unless specifically stated as treated, the boards should not automatically be considered pressure-treated exterior timber.

For outdoor projects, suitable timber preservative, sealing or protective treatment should be applied where necessary.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Cut ends
  • Exposed end grain
  • Areas close to the ground
  • Fixing points
  • Surfaces exposed to standing water

Regular maintenance may be required when timber is used externally.

Storage

Store scaffold boards:

  • Flat and adequately supported
  • Raised from the ground
  • In a ventilated area
  • Protected from prolonged standing water
  • With support at regular intervals
  • Away from unnecessary impact damage

Long boards should be supported at several points to help reduce unwanted bowing.

Handling

Scaffold boards are long and relatively heavy timber products.

Two-person handling may be required, particularly for 10ft and 13ft boards.

Take care when:

  • Unloading
  • Carrying through doorways
  • Moving around vehicles
  • Handling on building sites
  • Storing long boards

Ensure there is sufficient space available to safely receive and store the selected board length.
