Plastic vs Rubber Barrels
Economical and serviceable, plastic barrels are the standard barrels used by most tumbling enthusiasts. You will hear the stones turning, unlike rubber barrels, and though not too noisy it is recommended to run the machine in a room where the sound will not disturb you. The plastic end-caps are very tightly secured so before you use, submerge the barrel in warm soapy water and ease the caps off.
Rubber is the premium option when it comes to tumbler barrels. Rubber barrels run significantly more quietly than plastic barrels, are long lasting and have easy to remove lids. Rubber barrels provide many years – in some cases, a lifetime - of reliable service.
Double / Multiple Barrels
Most tumbling machines, provided they are large enough, can be used flexibly with regard to accommodating more than one barrel at a time.
The benefit of using double or multiple barrels is obvious in that this allows the processing of more than one batch of stones (or other product) at the same time and at different stages of a process. As such it is a very efficient use of the energy being generated by the tumbling machine, as well as your time waiting for the tumbler contents to be finessed! The 3lb tumbler will accommodate 2 x 1.5lb barrels concurrently.
The best rule of thumb is just to ensure that the barrels fit on the machine sufficiently comfortably for them to rotate, and that the maximum weight capacity of the machine is not exceeded.
