c.1940s Unique - Original Drypoint Etching
CLIPPER
By Claire Wayman
Featuring a Boy at a Park on Sunday
With His Wooden Model of a
Boeing 314 / Pan Am "Clipper" Flying Boat
This is a truly breathtaking, unique original c.1940s drypoint etching, pencil-signed and titled "CLIPPER" by artist Claire Wayman.
UNIQUE: I have found no record of another surviving copy of this drypoint etching, so you may very well be purchasing the only remaining copy.
The plate impression area is approx. 10½" x 7", and the fully framed size is 18¾" wide x 16¾" tall.
The subject is a boy in his early teens on a Sunday afternoon, with neatly parted hair, wearing a tie and Oxford shoes. He is seated on a neat landing alongside the pond in the park (notice the faint backdrop of a footbridge and live oak), admiring his wooden model of a "Clipper," which he has on a short tether.
According to online sources, "The Boeing 314 Clipper was an American long-range flying boat produced by Boeing from 1938 to 1941. One of the largest aircraft of its time, it had the range to cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans." It was principally used by Pan American World Airways, and figures prominently in their popular 1939 travel posters. (See final photo for an example.)
The etching is mounted in a mid-century solid wood frame with black lacquer finish. It has obviously been professionally re-matted with acid-free materials and re-sealed on the back, probably within the past 10-15 years.
[ CONDITION... ]
- Beautiful vintage condition -- from a non-smoking environment.
- The etching itself is in robust shape except for an edge tear, as pictured, that is principally in the margin and lower pond reeds. But, on close examination, it actually zigzags up to the plane's right wingtip. So sad; however, since this may be the only surviving copy of this print, we must forgive its shortcomings! It has been priced accordingly.
- The previous owner, as mentioned, apparently had it re-matted with acid-free materials. The frame has age issues: small scratches/scuffs, and a long split on the right-hand vertical piece, which is noticeable on close examination. (It's quite likely that this was the original frame in which the print was mounted long ago; otherwise, the owner would undoubtedly have opted for a more perfect frame when they had it re-matted.)
The above is my good-faith attempt to disclose all noteworthy issues. Keep
in mind that vintage/antique items always show their age. (Don't we
all!?) It would be impossible to mention every tiny detail, so please
expect that there will be something about this item (or lot) that's not perfect and may need touch-up.
