The 'Antiphonarium Romanum' is a liturgical book intended to be used by church choirs.
This Roman Antiphonary was declared universal in 1570 following the Council of Trent.
Including chants for the Divine Office for the hours of Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline for every day of the year.
This is a unique copy with music throughout and square notations used on red staves.
Leaves A6, C2-C5, O4, Q3-Q4, Q6, R3-R4, and o5 are provided handwritten in facsimile by a prior owner. Chip to the tail of leaf B2, affecting text only a very small amount. Significant loss to leaf I1 to the margin, and to the head of leaf H6. Bound without leaves I2-I5, K4 and K5, L5, T3-T6, gatherings U, V, W, and X, and leaves g6-l1. No gathering J, but catchwords are continuous. Text ends at leaf t5, with a page ccxxxix/ccxl loosely inserted.
CONDITION
In a full calf binding. Externally, lacking some of the backstrip, with part of the remaining backstrip lifting. Rubbing and marks to the boards and spine, with loss of leather to the extremities. Former repair to the head and tail of the spine and boards. Hinges are weak. Internally, binding is broken in one place and strained in others. Pages are age-toned with some spots and handling marks. Edge wear to many leaves, resulting in some small closed tears and chips. Leaves A6, C2-C5, O4, Q3-Q4, Q6, R3-R4, and o5 are provided handwritten in facsimile by a prior owner. Chip to the tail of leaf B2, affecting text only a very small amount. Significant loss to leaf I1 to the margin, and to the head of leaf H6. Bound without leaves I2-I5, K4 and K5, L5, T3-T6, gatherings U, V, W, and X, and leaves g6-l1. Leaves I6 to K3, Y1-Y2, Z6, and n6 are detached but present. Leaf g2 is detached with edge wear. No gathering J, but catchwords are continuous. Repaired chip to leaf N3, with a little loss of text. Small patch of worming to the tail of leaves Y3 to a5. Repairs to leaf Aa1, b4, e6, and g3. Text ends at leaf t5, with a page ccxxxix/ccxl loosely inserted.
