Madonna is the ’83 debut album by American singer Madonna. Having established herself as a singer in New York City, Madonna was signed by Sire due to the success of debut single, Everybody ('82). She was the sole writer for most of the tracks & chose Reggie Lucas as producer. Unhappy with Lucas's outputs, she asked John "Jellybean" Benitez to remix 3 tracks & produce Holiday. The album has an upbeat synthetic disco sound, using new technology of the time, including the Linn drum machine, Moog bass & the Oberheim OB-X synthesizer. She sang in a bright, girlish timbre, with lyrics about love & relationships. To promote it, she performed in clubs & on TV in the USA & UK throughout '83 & '84, followed by The Virgin Tour in '85. 5 singles were released, including the international top-10 hits Holiday, Lucky Star, & Borderline. It peaked at #8 on the USA Billboard 200 Albums Chart & hit the top 10 in Australia, France, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden & the UK. It received positive reviews from critics & has been credited for setting the standard of dance-pop for decades afterward & the musical direction for numerous female artists of the '80s.
